Alyana points to the feathers and the tracks. "somehow, the apprentice went past the rocks, and showed no desire to hide his trails"
When Theo mentions the magic, she looks at him confused "Do you mean that there is a spell on the rocks or that the rocks themselves are magical?"

OOC: Any thoughts then how we can find out more about the magic? I think our DM would just like us to be a bit more specific.

Indeed. Spellcraft would allow you to determine whether something is created by magic, or read any inscriptions or runes you find. I can say that there are four different spell auras Theo has discovered in and around the rock. Knowledge: arcana would answer a specific question, such as "what kind of spell could one put into a rock"? (Note: I don't promise that particular question will give and useful answers. I don't promise it won't, either.)

Alyana approaches Theo and punches him gently in the shoulder. Come on Wizard, help me with your magic. I might let you kiss me on the cheek. She smiles and goes evaluate the rocks and the nature of their magic.

The rocks themselves, closer examination tells, is fully natural of origin, even if it is, apparently, under multiple spells. Their surface is fully natural: no magical markings or symbols are discovered. These spells also appear to be rather powerful to have affected above a mere apprentice's skill.

Alyana is puzzled and perplexed "So the rocks are some kind of a magic barrier, done by probably quite a powerful wizard. The question is what is the role of the barrier. Is it to send a signal about intruders? Is it to create a scary distraction like the wolf? Theo, can you get more information? Regardless of that, we still got an apprentice to find. "

Taliea looks alarmed for a moment, "I hope it doesn't signal intruders!" "Is there any way you can tell more about what effects the spells might have?" the ranger enquires. "Alyana's right though. We may be spending too much time here, while our quarry is getting further ahead. We have to make a decision one way or another."

"If it's an alarm, whoever set it already knows we're coming, since we climbed over them. If it summons help, same thing. Unless you can tell what it does right now, we need to get moving, I don't want to sit here and wait to find out what it did."

After explaining all he has figured out, plus that the magic is from the school of enchantment, Theodorre agrees with the others, if they can't figure out what it is, then they should head out. As they continue to search for the dwarf, Theo discusses the enchantment school of magic to the others and the spells that give off such a strong aura.

Taliea agrees with the others. "Hanging around here won't do us much good. Let's get going." But before they leave she does a little magic of her own; touching each member of the party she casts a spell that she hopes will make it difficult for anyone to find them.
Casting Pass Without Trace on each party member.
The subject or subjects can move through any type of terrain and leave neither footprints nor scent. Tracking the subjects is impossible by nonmagical means. Lasts for one hour/level, so 6 hours.

Yes, I think we've all agreed we're going to keep following the tracks. Survival roll if that helps? 1d20+5=16

Starting at the single footprint they discovered in a patch of soft mud, the adventurers follow the tracks. It soon becomes clear that an effort has been made to cover the tracks, and the travelers only barely succeed in following them. After a few hours, the adventurers lose track of the trail. When they notice them again, they get a good theory of where they were leading, for there is a great, wide opening leading down.
I got to it as soon as I got home. Anyone with Track, roll one more Survival, and then do as you please.
