the game rules are free to download at the moment and the level 1-3 character generator is also free to download (but took me some tinkering to get to work on my computer)

Sorry, but I have to say it. My nerdery would allow me no less. "I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend." I'm downloading that stuff now. I don't have anything against 4E, but I'm not willing to spend any money on it just yet.

I'm not really a fan of it. Classes seem to have lost a lot of personal touch, and they seem to have removed familiars and companions. I liked those critters.

Cal, should I perform and exorcism on you? I wasn't going to say that. I might have been thinking it, but I wasn't going to say it. I can appreciate generic classes to some extent. I am very fond of D20 Modern, even though there are some house rules that can make a big difference balance and realism-wise. The base classes in that game are keyed off of abilities. The strong for bruisers, the fast for gunmen and agile characters, the tough for meatshield, the smart with a lot of skills and abilities giving bonuses based off them, the dedicated aimed at healers and detectives, and the charismatic with a charm ability, the face of the party. The advanced classes and prestige classes (advanced classes all required fourth level as the quickest way, prestige eighth level) were more specialized, but they could still be completely different. I had one strong/soldier which was focused on power attacking with a big sword, with grenades and a rifle built into his sword for when that was impractical, but then I had another strong/soldier that was all about being first to move and doing an impression of what a John Woo movie would be like if it were set in space. It can be nice to be able to fill in the blanks for flavor yourself. I tend to dislike PrCs with RP requirements in D&D, because sometimes the abilities they have are the key to fitting your character's abilities to their story, and it doesn't match the RP requirements of the class. If they are blanding out the distinct roles, that is something different. It is one thing to have a dozen classes to do any one thing, it is another thing when there is only one thing to do.

Me, maybe, but with exams coming up, I'll probably barely be able to come online enough to keep up with the ones I'm already in. But in a month or so, I'd be glad to see what all the talk's about.

been thinking
4th edition wont work with daily PbP because many special abilities are time dependent so it means that players MUST act in initiative order. it's possible to run a 4th ed game but there would need to have corners cut and some player patience

Good news. LEt's NOT run a 4.0 edition. Let's wait for 4.5 tomoorow and 5.0 next january. Hasbro is hurting and needs to milk the dnd fan base even more.
