Scene One ‘Enemy at the Gates’
WHEN; 21st hour, 27th day of Avriltine, 3806EYM
WHERE; Stanchion Carrera, Parliament District of The Great Dwarfholm of Magnarak within the capped active volcano Ferignis.
The most recent concussion caused more dust to fall upon the occupants of the wide stairwell as they hurried clutching what worldly possessions they could muster at short notice. The tremors signalled that the necroballistae were within the walls now and firing accurately upon the zeppelin terminals. Nobody thought that this day would come but the evacuation was a reality.
The constant stream of refugees poured up the gangways to the DS Prince Faldlin as a resolute captain waited, cramming his ship with more human cargo. And when the limit was reached, possessions were tossed overboard; priceless heirlooms and keepsakes to be replaced by children, sisters and brothers.
At another tower, a stanchion takes a direct hit causing the zeppelin and its contents to consume in an unholy conflagration. The screams can be heard just over the noise of battle and destruction. The second airship does manage to activate the launcher before the flames spread and it is propelled like a firework straight up through the caldera in to the open skies outside.
Commander Badlin Dullblade stood before the group of mercenaries as an aide approached with a sturdy iron chest before placing the heavy object on the ground. The dwarven veteran looked kindly at the foreigners as he kicked the chest open to reveal several neatly arranged purses of gems and gold. He was a sturdy middle-aged dwarf with battlescars that would make children wince yet his eyes were compassionate and calming.
“You’ve done your contract proud. I’d hope that specialist like you would have helped turn the tide of the assault but the magnitude of the enemy forces has surprised us all. You did your bit and at least delayed the fall of the City so we could evacuate as many citizens as we can. But now it is too late.
Here is your gold and take the last places on the Prince Faldlin. I hope we shall meet again in better times. For hearth and hoard!”
Badlin salutes and signals to the defenders to turn back the rest of the refugees that are piling up the staircase. Some wail and cry but the overwhelming response is the famous stern dwarven resolve as men, women and children prepare what weapons they have and turn round to face the upcoming invaders. A steady chant rises among the doomed cityfolk as they head away from the overcrowded airship;
The battlecry is violently silenced by a tremendous series of explosions as magical fireballs strike the nearby area. A complex of ground buildings catch fire and some chains and cables connecting the adjacent zeppelin tower where an airships are yet to take off.
The aide looks at you and urges, “You must hurry! The Prince Faldlin has to leave now if it is to make it safely out of the volcano. The enemy will be almost finished dismantling the magma seal and the volcano will erupt killing us all!”
summary ; you are all on full hit points (having been cured by the dwarven battle clerics after one last failed attempt to hold the city defences, then resting inthe infimary for the last few hours).
All is lost and the city is being evacuated, not everyone is getting out but at least more than would have been if not for your efforts. the airship Prince Faldlin has spaces reserved for you and is destined for the allied human trade city of Norward.
Each 120 ft high stanchion is topped by a platform 30 feet square to which are usually tethered two airships within arcane launch cradles. The cradles are connected to the stanchion by an intricate mechanism where they power the airships out of the caldera of the volcano, the other airship DS Pride of the Forge has already safely departed 15 mins ago from Stanchion Carrera.
A cunning seal prevents the volcano from erupting and destroying the city. the pressure is diverted through ingenious and colossal vents further in to the mountain range as well as providing geothermal energy. The minotaur attack has weakened the seal and breached the defences.
There are several hundred minotaurs and demons about to overrun the city in the next few minutes.
