Has anyone read the Illiad? Found it rather dry? I'd suggest Firebrand by Marion Zimmer Bradley then -- or even as a companion novel, by gum. Consider how such an epic may have been if you were in a woman's shoes -- Hecuba, Helen, or Briseis. Or perhaps still more, from the mysterious Cassandra (spelled Kassandra in the book). It's an eye-opening experience and a very good read at that. Once again, I've read it in French, but I can't remember the French title. Pretty good! Between that and Troy (with Brad Pitre), you can have a nice idea of what happened...

Late in the day, seeing the sun dip closer towards the horizon, the boy quickens his pace as he thought he heard something behind him. Dressed in dark blue trousers, a billowy green shirt, and topped off with well-made brown leather boots and a belt with many pouches on it, the boy, who looks to be in his late teens or beginning his twenties, quickly glances over his shoulder, squinting, as he thinks he just spied something flying and flitting into the treeline. He mumbles a curse as he looks up and down this worn road, seemingly not much bigger than a path, and wonders what creatures lurk in the treeline. He hesitates, then turns and moves on, almost tripping over a stone, half buried in the road, in his haste. As the human boy regains his composure and his balance, he tries not to look so nervous as he strolls down this so called shortcut to the small village of Deer Creek. Starting to believe he may be lost, he hears some light giggling off to his left just inside the dense treeline. Suddenly he stops and decides he has enough courage to investigate, he thrust his arms forward to let his hands escape the long billowy sleeves of his shirt and sets his jaw as he peers into the woods of the unknown forest. Finding it arduous to see past the large trunks of these massive trees, determined to see what follows, he steps towards the treeline....
As he steps off the path and his feet lightly touch the soft verdure below, he unconsciously reaches into the overly large pouch, on his right hip, hanging across his lean body, off his left shoulder. His hand snakes into the pouch until it meets the warmth of the brown and white fur of a weasel, his companion on these long journeys. Just knowing he's not alone as he gently rubs his little friend seems to give him the hint of courage, albeit the smallest bit of courage, as the weasel is still asleep and a trifle bit bored of the boy's constant forays into mischevious exploits. As he gets closer to a large tree, and looks between it and another, and just as he thinks he spots a couple small creatures flying, he slips. The boy quickly grabs the pouch to cradle his friend and lands hard on the ground and is immediately stung in the arm. As he starts to get back up, the stench is profound and rises into the air to greet his nose. The boy looks at his right leather boot to confirm the mess of feces that was left by some obviously large animal. He snorts and looks up to the treetops which hide the last remaining rays of sunlight of the day, knowing the mess is all over his back also. Just as he wonders what could have made this huge mess and how he missed seeing it, a loud infernal growl erupts from somewhere just inside the treeline. The human boy gathers his wits and scrambles back out of the edge of the forest and barrels down the path in his original direction. When the boy slows to catch his breath, the happening sort out in his mind. He wonders why he heard nothing before or after the growl, nothing of a large beast moving through the leaves, twigs and small branches that litter the forest floor. He thinks of the growl as he continues walking, the lone loud scary noise and was that laughter he heard after, just as he started runnning. Then he remembers the bee-sting, or so he thought, as he looks down to his left forearm to see a tiny arrow protruding out. With a curious look on his face, he pinches the arrow between his thumb and forefinger and gently plucks it from his arm. He stops in his tracks staring at the little missile, that looks like a toy but is deadly sharp. He quickly turns, looking over his left shoulder, just in time to see three little creatures flitting and flying about, suddenly dart into the treeline followed by the soft musical laughter and giggles.
The boy reaches into his left sleeve and pulls out a piece of burgandy cloth, "Ah, ah, achoo! and he dabs his nose with his hanky then placing it back deep within his left sleeve, "Where is the village?" Theodorre asks himself as he wonders if this is actually the right way to the little hamlet. He reaches back into the large pouch to gently scratch Koda, and wonders the whereabout of Eldar and the others, then he continues on before dark consumes the area and the pranks of his followers get more frequent.

Hey, did anyone else see that New Line is making a movie trilogy out of Phillip Pullman's wonderful books? Should be out around December if I saw correctly.
Heard the budget for just the first one along exceeds what was spent on the LOTR trilogy (or as least per movie).

That's what prompted me to read the books, I really hope they do a good job of it, there's nothing worse than films where the kids can't act!

They're using Nicole Kidman for Mrs. Coulter so who knows? That woman can be a great actress, but she can blow it sometimes...
-prays fervently for a great run-
